PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- The Heartland Nationals, a 12-under girls fast-pitch softball team based in Benton, Mo., split two games Tuesday during pool play in the Babe Ruth World Series.

Heartland lost to Hoquiam, Wash., 4-2 but came back to beat Souhegan Valley, N.J., 9-2.

Whitney Horrell was the losing hurler in the opener, allowing four hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Kaci Menz and Hannah Glueck each had two hits.

Miranda Schlosser got the win in the second game, her second of the tournament. She allowed four hits and two runs in four innings. Schlosser also had two hits.

The Nationals finished 2-2 in pool play and qualified for the six-team, double-elimination tournament play that begins today. Heartland will face Homewood, Ill., at 3:30 p.m.
