Cape Central hosts cross country meet

The 37th annual Cape Girardeau Central High School Cross Country Invitational, featuring 14 teams, will be held Saturday at Cape County Park North.

Squads participating, in addition to host Cape Central, will be Notre Dame, Jackson, Kelly, Advance, Delta, Oak Ridge, Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, Farmington, Kennett, Northwest, Fox and Carbondale, Ill.

Action will begin at 10 a.m. with junior high races, followed by freshmen races at 10:30 a.m., the JV girls race at 11 a.m., the JV boys race at 11:30 a.m., the varsity girls race at noon and the varsity boys race at 12:30 p.m.

Jackson softball tourney Saturday

JACKSON, Mo. -- Some of the state's top high school softball teams will take part in Saturday's Jackson Invitational at the Jackson City Park.

Local squads entered in the 16-team affair, in addition to Jackson, are Cape Central, Notre Dame, Kelly and Perryville.

First-round games at 8 a.m. feature Cape Central vs. Seckman, Notre Dame vs. Lutheran South, Jackson vs. Goreville (Ill.), Perryville vs. Lafayette and Vienna (Ill.) vs. St. Louis Notre Dame.

At 9:45 a.m., it's Kelly vs. Cor Jesu, Incarnate Word vs. Nerinx Hall and Fox vs. Hannibal.

Quarterfinals will be at 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with the semifinals at 3 p.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m.
