CHAVEZ HELPS CAPAHAS KNOCK OFF ST. LOUIS PRINTERS

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Craftsman Union Capahas received strong pitching from Jason Chavez and Mark Frazier in a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Printers Wednesday night.

Chavez worked the first seven innings for the victory, allowing both runs and four hits, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Frazier, a recent addition to the squad, fanned five and allowed one hit over the final two innings.

The Capahas (13-4) had seven hits, led by Tristen McDonald's 3-for-4 performance that included two runs batted in. Zach Borowiak went 2-for-4 and had two RBIs while Steve Kress added two RBIs.

The Capahas will host Dawson Springs, Ky., Friday night.

Cape A's, New Madrid split close doubleheader

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Sr. Babe Ruth A's split a doubleheader with New Madrid late Tuesday, losing 10-9 in eight innings and winning 9-7.

Cory Huskey led the A's (11-11) in the victory by going 3-for-3. Scott Brueckner, Stuart Doyle and Tyler Blackwell all had two hits. Zach Gowin was the winning pitcher in relief.

Huskey, Brueckner and Doyle all had two hits in the defeat. Chance Franklin took the loss in relief.

Brent Menz of Delta, Mo., placed in the top four in bull riding at the Missouri High School State Finals Rodeo last week and advanced to the national rodeo in Farmington, N.M. His name was omitted from a list published Wednesday.

The Blackhawks have re-signed right wing Steve Thomas, the team announced. Terms were not disclosed. Thomas, 38, signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent on July 18. He played in only 34 games last season, missing 47 because of a broken left ankle. He scored 11 goals and had 4 assists.

Motorsports

Ferrari escaped severe punishment for manipulating the finish of last month's Austrian Grand Prix. The governing body of Formula One racing, the FIA, imposed a joint $1 million fine on the automaker and drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello improper conduct, but it refused to deduct points for Ferrari's order that Barrichello let Schumacher pass him to win the race and strengthen his hold on the season standings.

Olympics

The French judge suspended by the International Skating Union in the pairs' scandal at the Winter Olympics is taking her case to the ISU's appeals committee. Marie-Reine Le Gougne's attorney said an appeal has been filed attacking the ISU council's decision two months ago, claiming the council denied her due process and had insufficient evidence against her. If the three-judge appeals committee in Lausanne, Switzerland rejects Le Gougne's request for a new hearing, she could then appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Tennis

John McEnroe voiced his displeasure but didn't respond specifically to allegations this week by his former wife, actress Tatum O'Neal, that he used steroids.

"I found it disappointing and ridiculous," McEnroe said at Wimbledon, where he is doing television commentary.

"I don't know what she is trying to accomplish,"he said.
