Basketball

The Detroit Shock hired former Pistons center Bill Laimbeer to replace Greg Williams as coach. Williams was fired earlier in the day after the Shock started the season 0-10.

The WNBA Players Association said it filed an unfair labor charge with the National Labor Relations Board late Wednesday against the New York Liberty and the WNBA for barring union officials from meeting with Liberty players at Madison Square Garden.

Colleges

Eastern Illinois senior forward Henry Domercant has withdrawn his name from the National Basketball Association's pre-draft list. The 2001-02 OVC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year had until Wednesday to officially withdraw from the 2002 draft. Domercant, the nation's second-leading scorer last year with 26.4 points per game, needs just 135 points to surpass Jay Taylor as the Panthers' all-time leading scorer.

Nebraska baseball fans tried to put the squeeze play on head coach Dave Van Horn to keep him from leaving for the University of Arkansas. Fans sent e-mails, signed cards and called radio stations to show support for Van Horn, who said he was mulling his options after he was offered the Arkansas head coaching job Monday.

Running

Dan O'Brien's comeback was interrupted when he dropped out of the decathlon at the U.S. Championships before completing the first day of competition at Berkeley, Calif. In third place among the 16 competitors after the first four events of the two-day, 10-event decathlon, O'Brien, 35, skipped the 400 meters because his left foot had become too painful.

Tennis

Lindsay Davenport, who has missed all of this season with a knee injury, will return to action in a Fed Cup qualifying series against Israel next month. Also chosen for the U.S. squad by captain Billie Jean King were fourth-ranked Monica Seles, top-ranked doubles player Lisa Raymond and Meghann Shaughnessy.
