St. Louis team wins Kelso Klassic crown
KELSO, Mo. -- Rain washed out the final games of the 18th annual Kelso Klassic fast-pitch softball tournament Sunday as St. Louis Lafayette Pub was declared the champion.
Lafayette Pub was leading defending champion Nokomis (Ill.) Bud Light 1-0 in the sixth inning of the winner's bracket final when the rain hit. Bud Light finished second.
Lafayette Pub won its other two tournament games, 1-0 over Teutopolis (Ill.) and 4-0 over the Memphis (Tenn.) Dawgs. Shane Doherty struck out a Klassic record 19 batters against the Dawgs and won the tournament's top pitcher award.
Timmy Hopkins of Smithton (Ill.) Meuth's/Sportsprint, who batted .580, won tournament MVP honors.
Smithton was third and the Memphis Dawgs were fourth.
Cape Legion places fifth in tournament
JONESBORO, Ark. -- Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion lost to Collierville, Tenn., 7-3 late Saturday night to finish fifth in the 20-team Pepsi One Classic.
Seth Hudson was the losing pitcher in relief, allowing two runs in one inning. Starter Tyler Schlosser gave up three runs in five innings. Cape (3-3) had just four hits. Josh Ford drove in two runs.
Cape's Timmy Wencewicz won the tournament's home run contest.
Riverdogs split two games at Fulton
FULTON, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Riverdogs (4-5) split a doubleheader with Fulton, Mo., Sunday, losing 6-5 and winning 6-1.
Mark Silverthorn 2 and Shane Gibson both had two hits in the opener. Tatum Kitchen took the loss.
Silverthorn, Gibson, Josh West, Danny Ivie, Scott Reinagel and Greg Craft all had two hits in the second game. West had three RBIs. Matt Stroup and Keith Heuring combined on a three-hitter. Heuring, who worked the final four innings, was the winner.
Cape Jr. Legion splits four weekend games
Cape Girardeau's Best Mortgage/Cliff's Rent to Own Jr. American Legion team split a pair of weekend doubleheaders.
Saturday, Cape swept visiting Paducah, Ky., 8-7 and 10-0 in six innings.
Matt Hellwege was the winner in the opener, with one inning of relief. Clay Schermann had three hits.
Blake Urhahn fired a two-hit shutout in the second game, with seven strikeouts. Steve Miinch had three hits while Sean Bard and Brandon Cooper added two each.
Sunday, Cape was swept by host Imperial, Mo., falling 4-3 and 9-8.
Lee Essner was the loser in the opener. Schermann had two hits. Miinch suffered the loss in the second game. He also had two hits.
