Kohlfield Scorpions post fourth straight win
The Kohlfield Scorpions rugby club posted its fourth straight win Saturday, defeating the St. Louis Hornets 68-5 at Arena Park.
The Scorpions had three breakaway scores in the first 10 minutes of the game. Tim Tucker scored three times for the Scorpions. Also scoring were Mark Lineberry, Eric Hinson, Ian Barnhouse, Alan Kloss, T.J. Ebner, Marcellus Jones, Carlos Velanzo and Scott Johnston.
The Scorpions next play March 28 at the Missouri Rugby Union invitational tournament at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Oran grad Heisserer earns all-AAMC honors
Williams Baptist College post player Sarah Heisserer has been named to the women's basketball first team in the All American Midwest Conference. She also was named to the AAMC's academic all-conference team by posting a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Heisserer, a 6-foot junior from Oran, averaged 14.1 points per game this season, connecting on 46 percent of her shots from the field.
Trinity Lutheran places sixth in state tourney
The Trinity Lutheran boys basketball team won one and lost two for a sixth-place finish at the Lutheran state basketball championships in Jefferson City.
The tournament was sponsored by the Lutheran Sports Association of Missouri and consisted of 12 junior high teams.
After a first-round bye, Trinity lost 48-35 to Immanuel of St. Charles. Trinity bounced back Sunday to beat Christ Community of Kirkwood, 47-46. Trinity finished with a 46-26 loss to Trinity of Jefferson City.
Trinity Cape Girardeau earned the tournament's sportsmanship trophy and banner for courteous behavior.
Members of the team are Austin Kwikkel, Max Wieser, Ryan Winkler, William Kester, Joda Holloway, Ross Gage, Christopher Roth, Jared Mueller, Tyler James and Sam Kluesner. Rick Wieser and Billy Gage served as coaches with assistance from Len Winkler and Kevin Pingel.
Capahas auction set for March 20
The Capahas baseball team annual benefit auction is set for March 20 at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park in Cape Girardeau.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and will include several items -- including sports-related memorabilia such as an autographed photo of Cubs pitcher Kerry Woods, tickets to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and an autographed version of John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success."
The Capahas, a team for amateur baseball players ages 19-28, date back to 1894 and have been state champions 12 times in the last 20 years.
Cape Shrine golf event is May 21 at Bent Creek
The ninth annual Cape Shrine Club Golf Tournament is May 21 at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson. The entry for the four-person scramble is $65 per person. For info, call tournament chairman Eddie Schreiner, 243-5503.
