The Detroit Pistons acquired Derrick Coleman and Amal McCaskill from the Philadelphia 76ers in a trade Wednesday for Corliss Williamson. The 37-year-old Coleman played in just 34 games last season while he struggled to stay healthy. The 6-foot-10 center averaged 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds. In 14 years, the Detroit native has averaged 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Williamson, entering his 10th season, was a solid reserve for the Pistons. The 6-7, 245-pounder averaged 9.5 points and 3.2 rebounds while playing both forward positions.

The woman who accused Kobe Bryant of rape will have to discuss with prosecutors whether she will go ahead with the criminal case because she fears the release of court documents about her sex life threatens her chance of getting a fair hearing, one of her lawyers said Wednesday. John Clune said his 20-year-old client will have to talk to prosecutors soon about that and will also consider whether to file a civil suit against the NBA star.

College

Colleges will have to file recruiting policies with their conferences, and could be sanctioned for violating them if the NCAA's Executive Committee approves an emergency proposal today. The legislation would take effect immediately and require schools to file recruiting policies before potential players make on-campus visits this year. A final policy would have to be filed by Dec. 1. Violators would face school-imposed sanctions and could face NCAA penalties if the governing body determines the infraction is "fundamentally contrary" to the stated policy.

"This is intended to provide clarity," said David Berst, an NCAA vice president and chairman of the task force. "It may not change the culture. In order for a general shift, there will have to be more movement by the schools and coaches."

A victim's counselor and a sex assault prevention expert have resigned from their jobs at the University of Colorado, saying they are unhappy with the campus culture. Heather Sturm left her job at the Rape and Gender Education Program while Amy Robertson is stepping down as head of the school's victim assistance office.

Colorado has spent much of the year dealing with allegations that its football players or recruits were out of control. Nine women since 1997 have accused football athletes of rape, though no charges have been filed. The university recently announced sweeping changes to the athletics department.

Memphis head coach Tommy West told running back Derron Parquet to leave his program Tuesday after Parquet's arrest in June. Parquet was arrested in June and charged with setting fire to his vehicle in nearby Collierville. The vehicle was registered to his father. Defensive tackle LaVale Washington also was arrested in the incident. West said he will make a decision on Washington's future following his court hearing.

Parquet rushed for 487 yards on 95 carries last season. The Tigers participated in a postseason bowl game for the first time in 32 years when they defeated North Texas 27-17 in the New Orleans Bowl. At the Conference USA's media days on Tuesday, the coaches picked Memphis to be second this season behind Louisville.

Hockey

Labor talks between the NHL and its players' union resumed Wednesday, but both sides said no progress was made toward a deal. The four-hour session in the union's Toronto office was their first meeting since July 21, when the league presented six possible concepts for a new economic system. The collective bargaining agreement expires Sept. 15. If a new agreement isn't reached, a lockout could threaten the entire season.

Motorsports

Not long ago, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin appeared to be anything but contenders for the NASCAR Nextel Cup championship. But both have rallied in the last two months and hope to parlay that momentum into a position among the top 10 -- and a shot at the title.

Under NASCAR's new system, only drivers in the top 10 after 26 of 36 races will vie for the title, and there are six weeks left until that cutoff. That makes Sunday's Brickyard 400 even more an immediate focus than usual for Jarrett and Martin. Martin is 13th in the standings, but only 89 points behind Kevin Harvick in 10th. Jarrett is 14th, 103 points behind Harvick.-- From wire reports
