College

The University of Colorado reinstated suspended football coach Gary Barnett on Thursday and said no one would lose their jobs because of the school's recruiting scandal. University President Betsy Hoffman said the embattled athletics department will be restructured as part of "sweeping" changes to reduce its autonomy and install greater accountability. Barnett and athletics director Richard Tharp would remain at the school, she said.

Texas pitchers Justin Simmons and J. Brent Cox were suspended from the team for the rest of the Big 12 tournament following their arrests for public intoxication.

Motorsports

Jimmie Johnson, the last of 52 drivers to make his attempt, set a Lowe's Motor Speedway record to edge Ryan Newman for the top in qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600. Johnson ran 187.052 mph -- about 0.02 seconds better than Newman -- for his first pole of the season. Jeff Gordon, Elliott Sadler and rookie Brian Vickers rounded out the top five.

Tennis

Serena Williams rallied twice to beat 17-year-old Russian Maria Kirilenko 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the French Open. The second-seeded Williams won the final four games to reach the third round. Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati also advanced to the third round. The No. 4-seeded Williams survived a sluggish start to beat Jelena Kostanic 6-3, 6-3. No. 7 Capriati defeated Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3. On the men's side, defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero lost to Russian Igor Andreev 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
