Baseball

* Jeff Bagwell will have surgery on his arthritic right shoulder early next month in hopes of prolonging his career that has been derailed by pain.

The Houston Astros' first baseman has been out since May 3. He was placed on the disabled list Tuesday for the first time in seven seasons, because of the degenerative shoulder condition that will require surgery, the team said before Sunday night's game against the San Francisco Giants.

"Hopefully, we will have him back for the last month of the season," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said.

* The Coliseum fan who threw a cup of beer at Yankees slugger Jason Giambi will face multiple criminal charges, officials said Sunday.

Eric Anduri of Lafayette, Calif., spent Saturday night in jail after pelting Giambi with the beer when the former Oakland Athletics star returned to the New York dugout after flying out in the eighth inning of the Yankees' 15-6 win.

Anduri, whose age wasn't available, was arrested and charged with battery, public intoxication and throwing objects on the field, said David Rinetti, the A's vice president of stadium operations. A spokesman for the Oakland Police Department would not confirm the charges Sunday.

Motorsports

The racing world will have to wait at least another year for a woman pole winner at the Indianapolis 500.

While reigning Indy Racing League champion Tony Kanaan took the pole, Danica Patrick bobbled on the first turn of her first qualifying lap and wound up fourth among the 22 drivers who qualified Sunday for the May 29 race.

The Brazilian driver was the third qualifier of the day, posting a four-lap, 10-mile qualifying average of 227.566 mph on the historic 2 1/2-mile oval. He then had to wait through nearly six hours while other drivers tried to knock him off his perch.

Tennis

* Top-ranked Roger Federer beat French teenager Richard Gasquet 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (4) Sunday to defend his Hamburg Masters title and collect his tour-leading sixth championship of the year.

By avenging one of only two losses this year, Federer stretched his Open era record -- he has now won 19 consecutive finals he has played since October 2003.

Federer is 41-2 this year. Going back to the beginning of last year's U.S. Open, Federer is 57-2.

Federer lost to Gasquet last month in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

* Amelie Mauresmo rallied to defend her Italian Open title Sunday with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over eighth-seeded Patty Schnyder.

Mauresmo improved to 25-6 this season and won her 17th career title.
