Triathlon
The organizer of the Ironhorse Triathlon in Springfield, Ill., said a lack of interest among competitors has prompted him to cancel this year's event. The number of registrants was low because of other races across the Midwest on the same weekend, including one in Chicago and another in St. Louis, organizer Paul McDevitt said in a statement on the triathlon's Web site. The event once attracted nearly 1,000 competitors when it became a qualifying race for the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. But the race became less popular in recent years; last year about 400 people competed.
The race has had problems other than competition. In 1998, some participants contracted leptospirosis, a rare bacterial illness, from swimming in Lake Springfield. The swimming portion was canceled the next year. The event returned to a triathlon format in 2000 and 2001, but the swimming leg was canceled in 2002 because of rising E. coli bacteria levels in the lake.
