Baseball

  • Adam Dunn agreed to a two-year, $18.5 million deal Monday, four days before he and the Cincinnati Reds were scheduled for an arbitration hearing.

Dunn got salaries of $7.5 million for this season and $10.5 million for 2007. The club has an option for a $13 million salary in 2008, which it can buy out for $500,000.

The outfielder/first baseman was the Reds' last player left in arbitration. He had asked for the second-biggest salary increase among the 44 major leaguers who exchanged arbitration figures with teams. Dunn sought $8.95 million in arbitration, and the club offered $7.1 million.

Colleges

  • A former junior college basketball coach was sentenced Monday to three years probation for falsifying federal work-study timecards so athletes would get paid for work they never did.

David "Soupy" Campbell, former head basketball coach at Barton County Community College in Kansas, was also ordered to pay $7,714 in restitution. He had plead guilty in November to one count of embezzlement from a federal student assistance program.

Campbell is the second coach sentenced so far in an investigation that ensnared eight coaches at the college in Great Bend and led to the firing of the school's president.

In December, former basketball coach Matt Skillman was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay $26,239 in restitution after pleading guilty to embezzlement and mail fraud.

Football

  • The St. Louis Rams added four assistants to new coach Scott Linehan's staff on Monday.

Joe Baker will serve as the defensive quality control coach, Jim Chaney the assistant offensive line coach, Jeff Horton the special assistant for offense, and Brad Roll the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Baker, entering his 12th NFL season, was previously the secondary and safeties coach for the Green Bay Packers. Roll, entering his 14th season in the league, spent the past two seasons as the Buffalo Bills' strength and conditioning coordinator.

Chaney and Horton will be making their NFL coaching debuts. Chaney spent the past nine seasons as the offensive coordinator at Purdue, and Horton was named the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at Iowa State last month.

Motorsports

  • Jimmie Johnson's crew chief was thrown out of the Daytona 500 on Monday for illegal modifications made to Johnson's car during pole qualifying.

Chad Knaus was accused of raising the rear window on the No. 48 Chevrolet to alter aerodynamics during Johnson's run Sunday. The infraction was discovered in a post-qualifying inspection when the car failed to fit NASCAR templates.

NASCAR said Knaus cannot appeal the ejection.

NASCAR also said the team is subject to additional penalties, which would not be announced until after Sunday's Daytona 500.
