The original deal, struck in January 1999, came after a lengthy lockout that cut the 1998-99 season short.

Colleges

Sports Illustrated and one of its writers must reveal confidential sources for an article that led to Alabama's firing of Mike Price, a judge ruled. U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith said the Alabama law protecting newspaper, television and radio reporters from being forced to disclose their sources doesn't extend to magazine reporters.

George O'Leary was hired to coach Central Florida, giving him another chance in college football two years after Notre Dame forced him to resign because he lied on his resume. O'Leary, the Vikings' defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, said he chose Central Florida because he saw the opportunity to build the program into a national powerhouse.

Tennessee running backs coach Woody McCorvey became the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State, joining the staff of new coach Sylvester Croom. The 53-year-old McCorvey joined the Vols' staff in 1999 after coaching receivers at South Carolina for one season. McCorvey had been the receivers coach and offensive coordinator under Gene Stallings at Alabama, from 1990-97.

Oklahoma cornerback Derrick Strait was named winner of the Charlotte Touchdown Club's Bronko Nagurski Trophy. The award is given each year to the national defensive college football player of the year. Strait, a senior, beat out Sooners tackle Tommie Harris, UCLA end Dave Ball, Louisiana State tackle Chad Lavalais and West Virginia linebacker Grant Wiley. At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Strait led the Big 12 in fumbles recovered with four and was fourth in the conference in passes defended, with 12 breakups to go with his three interceptions.

Football

Patrick Ramsey is done for the season, placed on injured reserve before he undergoes foot surgery. The Redskins quarterback said he will have surgery on his troublesome right foot within the next two weeks, prematurely ending his first year as an NFL starter.

Broncos defensive tackle Daryl Gardener was deactivated for the rest of the season Monday for a non-football illness. Gardener was suspended twice for a total of three games for conduct detrimental to the team. He was to join the team Monday after the suspensions, but Broncos coach Mike Shanahan decided to shelve Gardener so the player can seek treatment for unspecified personal issues.

Hockey

Brett Hull moved into third place on the NHL career goal list by scoring 1:51 into overtime Monday night of the Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Hull's 732nd goal snapped a tie with Marcel Dionne and moved the Red Wings forward behind only Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801). Hull scored for the seventh straight game and added an assist.
