Baseball

• The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Mike Cameron from the New York Mets for utility player Xavier Nady on Friday.

Before the Padres agreed to complete the deal, they wanted to make sure Cameron's vision was OK following a face-to-face collision with Mets teammate Carlos Beltran in the outfield at San Diego's Petco Park on Aug. 11 that ended Cameron's season.

The Padres tried to sign Cameron as a free agent after the 2003 season, but he accepted a $19.5 million, three-year deal from the Mets.

Nady, a second-round draft pick in the 2000 amateur draft, was billed as a super-sub last season, playing at first and third base, and all three outfield positions. He batted .261 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs.

Football

Terrell Owens appears no closer to returning to the field this season as his grievance hearing against the Philadelphia Eagles went to a lengthy arbitration on Friday. As of late Friday evening, talks were ongoing and arbitrator Richard Bloch hadn't issued a ruling more than 12 hours after the hearing started. The dismissed Owens is seeking reinstatement, but the receiver probably won't play again for the Eagles -- no matter the outcome. The All-Pro wideout was suspended on Nov. 5 after criticizing the Eagles and some of his teammates.

Tennis

Gaston Gaudio didn't want to think about Roger Federer on Friday night.

He just wanted to savor the feeling of qualifying for the Masters Cup semifinals after saving three match points in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Fernando Gonzalez.

The 2004 French Open champion is playing on his least-favored surface -- indoor hardcourt -- and had less than 22 hours to recover between his last round-robin match at Qi Zhong Stadium and his meeting today with Federer.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko didn't drop a set as he rounded off the Gold Group matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mariano Puerta. Davydenko faces David Nalbandian, who placed second to Federer in the Red Group, in the other semifinal.
