Southwest Missouri State protected its first-day lead, finishing six strokes ahead of host Southeast Missouri State University Tuesday to win the 1998 Drury Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Cape Girardeau Country Club.
The Bears started Tuesday six strokes ahead of Southeast and both teams recorded 289 rounds. Southwest finished with a three-round total of 857. Southeast, which had two golfers finish in the top 10, had a team score of 863.
Morehead State was third with an 865, followed by Austin Peay (865), Creighton (885), Tennessee State (887), Murray State (892), Missouri-Kansas City (894), Evansville (896), Tennessee-Martin (905), Southern Illinois (907), Bradley (914), Eastern Illinois (917) and Chicago State (1,089).
Morehead State's Ben Hensley, who was tied for the lead after two rounds, earned medalist distinction with a 2-under-par 68 for a 205 total. Southwest's Jason Whitesell, who was tied with Hensley entering the day, shot a 72 for a second-place 209 total.
Southeast's Jason Owen tied for fifth at 214 with a final-round 69. Teammate Jake Saladin was right behind with a 215 total after shooting 74 in the last round. Rounding out the Southeast score were Bryan Johnson (74-218), Ryan Smith (75-220) and Derek Rahlmann (73-222).
