Southeast Missouri State University track and field athlete Heather Jenkins established a school record while also breaking arena and meet records in the weight throw during last weekend's meet at Arkansas State.
Jenkins, a sophomore from Central High School, had a throw of 55 feet 9 inches that is the best in the Ohio Valley Conference so far this indoor season.
Last season, Jenkins finished 15th in the discus at the NCAA outdoor national meet. She has the best indoor shot put in the OVC this year with 47-5 3/4.
Southeast's women have several OVC-best performances this season. Lindsay Zeiler is first in the mile (4:58.86) and 3,000-meters (9:58.30); Meleisa Greene and Rose Fulton rank one-two in the 55-meters (7.15 and 7.19); Greene has the best long jump (18-9 1/4); and Brooke Woodruff is first in the 800-meters (2:14.81).
Also, Southeast pole vaulters have the three top conference performances with Michelle Jett, Megan Rosenkoetter and Becky Komerech all over 10 feet.
Southeast's men also have several OVC leaders: Shelton Scott in the long jump (23-10) and triple jump (49-4 1/2); Jay Heddell in the shot put (57-5 3/4); Brandon Myer in the weight throw (51-4 3/4); Andrew Lambert in the high jump (6-6); and David Herman in the 55-meter hurdles (7.69).
Gymnasts compete at home Saturday
Southeast's gymnastics team will put its 5-3 record on the line Saturday when nationally ranked Illinois-Chicago visits Houck Field House for a 1 p.m. meet.
The Flames, ranked 19th, have a season average of 195.075. Southeast has a 191.192 average.
In conjunction with the meet, Southeast will host a Junior Olympic competition, with female gymnasts ages 5 through 18 having sessions tonight and Saturday.
