The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team went 1-3 over the weekend at the Mizzou Classic in Columbia, Mo.

Southeast began the tournament on Friday, beating Towson 25-17, 24-26, 25-13, 27-25 and losing to Middle Tennessee State 25-22, 25-17, 25-18.

In action Saturday, the Redhawks (7-7) were swept by Samford 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 and undefeated Missouri, the tournament host, 25-13, 25-14, 25-13.

Southeast's Emily Coon was named to the all-tournament team.

Colleen Yarber had 14 kills and 12 digs against Towson. Berkley Idel led in digs with 19 while Andrea Baylin added 11.

Baylin paced the Redhawks with nine kills against Middle Tennessee. Idel led in digs with eight.

Coon led with 16 kills against Samford. Idel and Baylin had 10 digs apiece.

Baylin had a team-high eight kills against Missouri while Idel recorded eight digs.

Southeast, the defending Ohio Valley Conference West Division champion, opens OVC play Friday with a 6:30 p.m. home match against Eastern Illinois. The Redhawks host SIU Edwardsville at 1:30 p.m. the following day.

The Redhawks will attempt to break the program's home attendance record of 1,168, set in 1993, Friday against Eastern Illinois.

A total of 900 T-shirts will be given out to students and bleachers will be placed on the floor of Houck Field House for students. 

Cross country

Southeast did not participate in the team scoring but several runners took part in Saturday's Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., although many of the Redhawks' top runners had the weekend off.

Colton Strotheide was Southeast's top male finisher, placing 11th with a time of 26 minutes, 55.83 seconds over the 8-kilometer course.

Andrew Gordon was 17th (27:22.70), Jackson High School graduate Tyson Stoverink 23rd (28:07.81), Sean Brown 30th (28:43.41) and Notre Dame High School graduate Cole Ross 37th (29:08.22).

Southeast's women had only two competitors. Gloria Westlake was 20th, running the 5-kilometers in 19:33.15, while Madeline Gaul finished 56th (23:25.93).

Southeast's next meet is Oct. 5 at the Greater Louisville Classic.

Softball

Southeast opens fall exhibition play with two games today in Carbondale, Ill. The Redhawks face Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. and John A. Logan College at 4 p.m.

Today's games are among eight scheduled contests the Redhawks have this fall.
