Southeast scores 10 but allows 11 to SLU

~ The Redhawks' four-game winning streak ended with a dramatic road loss.

Despite reaching a season-high run total, Southeast Missouri State saw its four-game winning streak end Tuesday.

Host St. Louis University rallied from a late five-run deficit and scored three times in the ninth to stun the Redhawks 11-10.

The Billikens scored the winning run on a bases-loaded hit batsman.

The Redhawks, who fell to 10-15, will play a second straight nonconference game today when Southern Illinois (18-13) visits Capaha Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch.

Southeast, coming off a three-game weekend sweep of Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State in which the Redhawks did not allow a run, appeared to be in total control against SLU (14-12) after scoring six runs in the second inning.

That marked Southeast's biggest single-inning outburst of the season. The Redhawks' previous high single-game run total had come during a 9-5 win over Jackson State on Feb. 26.

SLU chipped away and pulled within 6-5, but the Redhawks took command again after a four-run sixth inning made the score 10-5.

But Casey Moore's three-run home run off reliever James Hibbard in the eighth sliced the deficit to 10-8.

Josh Parham, who has been Southeast's most effective reliever, recorded the final out in the eighth and appeared set to record his second career save, and second in less than a week.

But with one out in the ninth, Parham hit Johnny Sweeney with a pitch, and Greg Rodgers belted a two-run homer that tied the game.

Gilbert Marlowe followed with a triple. After two intentional walks loaded the bases, Parham hit Ziggy Moore with a pitch to bring home Marlowe with the winning run.

The Redhawks had eight hits after compiling a season-high 12 hits during Sunday's 7-0 win over Murray State. Omar Padilla and Andy Johnson each had two hits.

Johnson was a pitcher last year, but an injury has kept him from the mound this season. He entered Tuesday's game hitless in two at-bats, but was used as the DH after some impressive batting practice.

SLU had 12 hits against three Southeast pitchers, led by Rodgers with a 3-for-3 performance.

Southeast's Phillip Riley made his first career starter, after previously pitching 6 2/3 innings in relief.

Riley gave the Redhawks a solid 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, with just two earned.

Hibbard, who replaced Riley in the fifth, worked two scoreless innings before being tagged in the eighth. He allowed five hits and four runs, three earned. Parham (0-2) took the loss.

The Redhawks grabbed control with a six-run second inning, which featured three hits, three walks and a hit batter. Andrew Graham had the big blow, a three-run double.

Leading 6-5, the Redhawks padded their advantage with a four-run sixth, keyed by Padilla's two-RBI single. But SLU stormed back.

Southeast, after committing just one error in its previous five games, made two errors against SLU.

Asif Shah, who pitched six scoreless innings during last Wednesday's win over Missouri, is scheduled to start today against SIU. The Salukis also are coming off a loss, Tuesday's 5-4 setback at Tennessee-Martin.
