The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team found the going rough over the weekend against major-conference squads.
Southeast dropped all three of its matches at the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic in Atlanta.
The Redhawks (3-6) finished tournament play with two losses Saturday, falling to host Georgia Tech 26-24, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20 and Clemson 25-16, 25-12, 25-17.
Southeast opened the tournament Friday with a 25-16, 25-18, 18-15, 25-20 loss to Mississippi despite a record-breaking defensive performance by senior Molly Davis.
Davis had 39 digs to set a new school single-match record. Her total surpassed Jackie Derwort, who recorded 38 digs against Eastern Illinois in 1997.
Davis broke Southeast's career digs record earlier this season.
Senior Amanda Rickhoff led Southeast with 12 kills. Freshman Brittany Kalinoski had a collegiate-best eight kills and 12 digs.
Senior Karleigh DeLong, playing with a mask after suffering a broken nose last week, recorded a season-high 18 kills to lead Southeast against Georgia Tech.
Freshman Angela Cichelero made her first collegiate start at setter and handed out 34 assists. She led the squad with four block assists while adding six kills and seven digs.
Davis recorded 22 digs while Kalinoski, also making her first collegiate start, had seven kills.
Kalinoski led Southeast with nine kills and Davis had 20 digs against Clemson.
The Redhawks, who have not yet had a home match, open Ohio Valley Conference play on the road next weekend. They face Tennessee Tech on Friday and Jacksonville State on Saturday.
Cross country
The Southeast cross country teams posted four top-10 finishes at Friday's Eastern Illinois Panther Open in Charleston, Ill.
Junior Jason Lumpkin was the top overall finisher for the Redhawks as he recorded his second straight second-place performance. He completed the 8K course in a career-best 25 minutes, 28.71 seconds.
Lumpkin was coming off being named the OVC's male runner of the week for his performance during the season-opening Saluki Early Bird Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
Junior Chris Loseman was fourth Friday in a career-best 25:29.90.
Also on the men's side, freshman Tyler Mullen was 18th (26:35.38) and junior Cody Martin was 21st (26:39.33).
Southeast's women again were led by senior Szandra Pal. The former basketball player was ninth in the 5K in 18:53.98.
Sophomore Liz Speicher was 10th with a career-best 19:01.27.
Also for Southeast's women, junior Kasey Owens was 13th (19:14.35), junior Monica Noble 14th (19:16.57) and junior Linnea Woldtvedt 15th (19:17.46).
Southeast runners are next in action Saturday at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
Women's soccer
The Southeast soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss Friday to Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La.
Southeast fell to 4-3, while the Demons improved to 6-1.
The Redhawks outshot Northwestern State 8-7, but had no corner kicks in the game compared to six for the Demons.
Southeast returns to action today with a 2 p.m. home game against Western Kentucky.
