The Southeast Missouri State softball team avoided a series sweep Saturday by beating host Tennessee-Martin 4-3.

Southeast, 13-19 overall and 4-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference, snapped an 11-game losing streak. The Redhawks, who were swept in Friday's doubleheader, remained eighth in the nine-team OVC.

Freshman Giana Zimmerman held UTM (24-18, 8-8) to four hits over the seven-inning distance. Zimmerman, who improved to 8-8, allowed two earned runs. She struck out three and walked four.

The Redhawks had six hits, led by junior Alex Ramirez with two. She also had two RBIs. Junior Elise Sperakos hit a solo home run.

Southeast returns to action Wednesday with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against Saint Louis University.

Tennis finishes year

The Southeast women's tennis squad finished its season Friday with a 5-2 loss at Eastern Illinois.

Southeast ended 1-19 overall and 1-8 in the OVC. The Redhawks wound up ninth in the 10-team conference.

No. 1 singles player Julia Masotti notched Southeast's only win on the court Friday as she beat Cara Huck 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 (super-tiebreaker). The Redhawks also claimed one default victory in singles and doubles.

Masotti, a senior, had the Redhawks' top individual record this season, 5-13
