The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team concluded the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2 in Montgomery, Alabama, by splitting a pair of matches.

The Redhawks picked up their third sweep of the tournament by defeating Savannah State in three sets Friday morning before falling to Southern Mississippi in five sets to end the tournament.

Southeast (4-7) handily defeated the Savannah State, holding the Tigers to single digits in two sets and winning the match 25-9,25-21, 25-7.

Senior outside hitter Andrea Baylin led the Redhawks with nine kills in the match. Freshman outside hitter Krissa Gearring tallied seven kills and six aces in the win.

Junior middle blocker Taylor Masterson and freshman middle blocker Nzingha Clarke each had six kills.

Southeast took two sets from Southern Mississippi, both went to extra points and the Redhawks won by two.

The Golden Eagles won 25-16, 24-26, 25-12, 25-27, 15-10.

Baylin finished with 10 kills and 11 digs in the match while Gearring added 10 kills. Masterson had eight kills and senior rightside hitter Kelsey Keeve had seven.

The Redhawks face Missouri-Kansas City on the road on Wednesday.

Cross Country team fares well at Forest Park

The Southeast men's and women's cross country teams returned to Forest Park in St. Louis for its second meet of the season on Friday.

The men's team finished second and the women took fourth place in the Forest Park Cross Country Festival hosted by Saint Louis University.

Junior Shane Brown led the men's team with a 10th-place finish in 19 minutes, 13 seconds. Four other Redhawks finished in the top-20: freshman Tyler Beaman (14th), freshman Nathan Cook (15th), senior Tyson Stoverink (18th) and senior Ryan Anderson (19th).

Seniors Rebekah Lawson and Gloria Westlake finished 9th and 10th in 18:18 and 18:20, respectively. Angie Sumner finished 23rd while Mary Dohogne finished 25th.

The Redhawks travel to Carbondale, Illinois, on Saturday for the Saluki Invitational.

Tennis squad opens season at UT-Martin

The Redhawks tennis squad opened its fall season at the UT-Martin tournament on Friday.

Southeast won four singles matches against North Alabama, including three wins by freshmen. Freshman Mariya Kostyuk won the No. 1 match 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. The No. 4 match was a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 victory for sophomore Annisa Warasanti.

Freshman Anna Makhneva won the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Maria Montenegro also won in straight sets, taking the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-1.

The Redhawks came away with one doubles win against the host Skyhawks. Montenegro and Makhneva won the No. 3 doubles competition 8-7, (9-7).
