Senior Kayla Fortner homered twice in the Redhawks doubleheader sweep of Eastern Illinois to bring her total to 16 for the season and overtake the mark of 14 set by Michelle Summers in 2007.

The Southeast Missouri State softball team crowned a new single-season home run leader with a record-breaking day at the plate.

Senior Kayla Fortner homered twice in the Redhawks doubleheader sweep of Eastern Illinois to bring her total to 16 for the season and overtake the mark of 14 set by Michelle Summers in 2007.

Southeast hit a combined eight home runs in the pair of victories. The Redhawks broke a school record and tied an Ohio Valley Conference record with six homers in the second game of the day.

Fortner, who raised her batting average to .402 on Saturday, was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBIs in her team's 6-0 victory in Game 1. Lindsey Patterson and Riley Hayes also had two RBIs apiece.

Freshman Madeline Krumrey pitched the complete-game shutout. She allowed four hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.

Southeast won Game 2 9-4. The Redhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Fortner, Savannah Carpenter and Patterson hit back-to-back-to-back home runs.

The Redhawks also recorded three solo shots in the bottom of the third to build a 6-0 cushion when Carpenter, Hayes and Darby Pruett all homered.

Southeast added three more runs in the fourth before allowing three in the top of the fifth and one in the seventh.

Sophomore Keaira Schilling got the win for Southeast. She allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in seven innings.

Southeast improved to 15-23 overall and 9-11 in the OVC while EIU dropped to 16-24 overall and 11-10 in the OVC.

The Redhawks are in eighth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams will make the conference tournament, which begins May 6 and will be played at the home of the regular-season champion.

Track and field

Jackson graduate Blake Smith placed second in the 100-meter dash and Central graduate Chris Martin finished fifth in the triple jump for Southeast's top finishes at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.

The Redhawks also had several participants at the A-State Red Wolves Open in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Ayonna Cartwright was second in the 100-meter dash while Cheyenne Tunti was second in the 400-meter and Jovannie Spears came in fifth.

Sydney O'Brien and Jackson graduate Lindsey Seabaugh were fourth and fith in the 3,000-meter run while Kristen Richardet of Jackson took third in 3,000-meter steeplechase twilight.

Spears, Tunti, Megan Parks and Chelsea Miller teamed up for a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay and Notre Dame graduate Jordan Barber, Brandon Chunn, Kameron Long and Jarred Pasley were second in the event on the men's side.

Pasley placed second in the 400 and fifth in the 200. Chris Navarro took third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Marc Maton came in second in the 1,500-meter run, Nathan Cook was fifth in the 3,000 and Craig Munie was fourth in 5,000-meter run twilight

Shane Brown and Jackson graduate Tyson Stoverink went two-three in the 3,000-meter steeplechase twilight. Jacob Kent tied for fourth in high jump.

Women's basketball

Former Southeast women's basketball coach Ty Margenthaler announced via Twitter on Friday that he has accepted an assistant coaching position on Mike Morris' staff at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.

Margenthaler resigned from Southeast on March 23. The Redhawks were 37-78 and 18-46 in the OVC and failed to make the conference tournament during Margenthaler's four seasons at Southeast.
