Two women's relay teams from Southeast Missouri State University established new school records while placing high in this past weekend's prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

The sprint medley relay team of Shannon O'Dell, Shauna Birge, Yvonne Hente and Tammy Wenkel timed 3:54.64 to place second behind Arizona as over 18,000 fans watched at Drake Stadium.

The time of 3:54.64 betters the school record by nearly five seconds. The old record of 3:59.16 was held by the 1987 team of Laura Byrne, Kehinde Vaughan, Lisa Like and Michelle Hicks.

Southeast's 800-meter relay team finished fourth at Drake in a school-record time of 1:36.95. The team of O'Dell, Kim Stewart, Birge and Hente bettered the school record they had established earlier this year in winning the All Sport Relays title.

"Our women's teams ran super at Drake," said Southeast coach Joey Haines. "It was a great experience for our women running in front of a record crowd at Drake."

This Saturday, both the Southeast men's and women's teams will compete at the University of Missouri Invitational in Columbia.

"We feel that we have a couple of relay teams and some individuals who have chances to qualify for the NCAA championships, but we don't expect that to happen this weekend," Haines said. "We're going to train hard this week and just go up to Missouri, have fun and compete as well as we can."
