Southeast Missourian Player of the Week: Travis Phillips

Scott City junior Travis Phillips deflected the praise after rushing for more than 200 yards in the Rams' Week 3 victory over East Prairie.

"It makes me feel proud of my line," Phillips said. "Everybody could have run through those holes."

Phillips ran for 218 yards and scored two touchdowns in his team's 28-0 win. He has gained at least 100 yards in all three games this season, more than making up for the graduation of Garett Schaefer.

"I'm trying," said Phillips, who gained 82 yards in the opening half before piling up 136 second-half yards against East Prairie.

Philips has helped the Rams start the season 2-1. He's gained 442 yards on 61 carries, a 7.2-yard per carry average.

"He's a real good player. He plays hard for his size," Scott City coach Jim May said. "He doesn't have breakaway speed like Garret had, but he hits the hole hard."

Phillips also has played an important role on defense. He's recorded 14 tackles and earned half of a sack against St. Vincent in Week 2.

"We wanted it badly," said Phillips, who also plays linebacker, about the shutout of East Prairie.

Phillips will try to continue his streak of rushing for at least 100 yards in each game when the Rams host Dexter in Week 4.
