Southeast Missouri State senior Travis Hayes was named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing eight shutout innings in a 3-2 victory over Austin Peay over the weekend.
Hayes, the OVC Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2014, struck out a career-high 12 batters Saturday in improving 5-3.
The right-hander allowed just three hits over the first eight innings before allowing two runs in the ninth inning to the Govs before departing with one out. He allowed four hits overall -- all singles.
Hayes, who has a 4.18 ERA, is tied for the OVC lead with his five wins and ranks third with 46 strikeouts.
Southeast dropped the opening game of the three-game series to Austin Peay, before winning its fifth straight OVC series behind Hayes' start and a 12-11 walk-off victory in 13 innings Sunday.
It marks the second straight week a Southeast pitcher has won the award, with Hayes following teammate Joey Lucchesi.
The Redhawks, 11-4 in the OVC and 17-11 overall, return to action today when they host Missouri State in a non-conference game at 6:35 p.m. at Capaha Field.
