Southeast women's basketball
A local addition to the Southeast Missouri State women's basketball program became official Tuesday.
Former South Pemiscot star and Missouri transfer Carrie Shephard signed to play for the Redhawks and second-year coach Rekha Patterson.
The 5-foot-4 guard from Steele, Missouri, will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules but will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are excited to have local standout Carrie Shephard join our Redhawk family," Patterson said in a press release. "Her experience is going to help as we work to change the culture of the program. Our fans are going to love her not only because she is a hard working, competitive student-athlete that is going to take pride in wearing a Southeast Missouri uniform, but more importantly because she is a great person."
Shephard spent the last two seasons at Mizzou. She played in 28 games, averaging 5.5 minutes, for the Tigers and scored 26 points during her two-year stint in Columbia, Missouri.
Shephard was named Miss Show-Me Basketball by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association following her senior season at South Pemiscot as well as the Semoball Awards Girls Basketball Player of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year.
She averaged 35 points per game as a junior and led the Bulldogs to conference and district titles as a sophomore and senior. They reached the Class 2 quarterfinals in 2012.
Shephard was a four-time all-conference selection as well as three-time all-state, all-district and all-region. She was the Class 2 Player of the Year twice and a McDonald's All-American nominee.
