The Southeast Missouri State softball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a win in Game 1 of its doubleheader against Missouri State on Tuesday night before being shutout in the second contest.
The Redhawks defeated the Bears 8-4 before falling 4-0 in Game 2 at Killian Stadium in Springfield, Missouri.
Southeast (6-18) led the Bears 4-0 after three innings in the first game.
First baseman Lindsey Patterson, who was 5 for 7 in the double with four RBI and three runs, reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the first to put the Redhawks up 1-0.
Left fielder Taylor McDannold doubled the lead with a solo home run in the second before a two-run home run by Patterson in the third gave Southeast a four-run advantage.
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after on a sacrifice fly scored Erika Zimmer, who led off with a triple.
Southeast pushed its lead to 5-1 in the sixth, but Zimmer drove in two runs on a double in the bottom of the inning to pull MSU within 5-3.
The Bears never got any closer. Southeast scored three runs in the seventh with RBIs from center fielder Kayla Fortner, third baseman Savannah Carpenter and Patterson.
An MSU solo home run in the bottom of the inning made it 8-4.
Freshman pitcher Madeline Krumrey (4-6) recorded the complete-game win, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out two and walked three.
The Redhawks mustered just four hits in their Game 2 loss, two of which were off the bat of Patterson.
MSU starting pitcher Chelsea Jones struck out four Southeast batters and walked just one as she secured the win and improved to 9-6.
Jones drove in the only run the Bears would need in the bottom of the first. She singled to center to make it 1-0.
Bears third baseman Chelsea Thomas led off the second inning with a home run. MSU (17-17) added a run in each the fourth and fifth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Aubrey Denno (0-5) was credited with the loss for Southeast. She allowed two earned runs on two hits with three walks and no strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Keaira Schilling relieved her and allowed two earned runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. She walked three and struckout one batter.
The Redhawks travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend. They face Tennessee State in a doubleheader on Friday and Belmont in a doubleheader Saturday.
