A ninth-inning run kept the Southeast Missouri State softball team from picking up two wins against the Belmont Bruins on Friday.
The Redhawks defeated Belmont 3-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader before dropping a 2-1 decision in nine innings to close out the day.
Southeast scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning of the opener. Claire Wernig had an RBI double and Danielle Turner hit a two-run home run to left for the final score.
Starter Haley Thogmartin improved to 5-6, allowing just two hits in the complete-game shutout. She walked two and struck out six.
Carolyn Snodgress (1-6) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in three innings.
The Redhawks held a 1-0 lead in the second game after Riley Hayes drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bruins knotted it up in the top of the seventh.
Amy Zeronian hit a one-out single, advanced to third on a double by Baylee Cook and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Bruins stranded the bases loaded and the Redhawks ran in to the final out of the game as Sarah Messex tried to reach third on a two-out single by Wernig to send it into extra innings.
Sheyanne Meadows hit a two-out home run to center in the top of the ninth and the Redhawks were retired in order in the home half to give the Bruins the win.
Maddie Krumrey took the loss. She gave up both earned runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts as she pitched nine innings.
The Southeast tennis team dropped its 10th straight match, falling 5-2 on the road to Jacksonville State.
The Redhawks (1-12, 0-3 Ohio Valley Conference) got wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles with Mariya Kostiuk winning 6-3, 6-4 and Emilia Montenegro winning 6-1, 6-2.
Anais Emelie lost 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 at No. 5 singles while Isabella Krupa, Mila Majtan and Annisa Warasanti lost in straights sets in the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots, respectively.
Kostiuk and Emelie won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, but Warasanti and Montenegro lost 6-0 at No. 3 and Krupa and Majtan played to a 6-6 tie before falling 7-3 at No. 2 to give the Gamecocks the doubles point.
Southeast travels to UT Martin on Tuesday.
The Southeast Missouri State track and field team split up to compete at three different meets over the weekend.
Some Redhawks were at the Hendrix Spring Break Multis in Conway, Arkansas, while others competed at the Arkansas Spring Invitational and the SIU Bill Cornell Spring Classic in Carbondale, Illinois.
Taylor Coffelt won the women's heptathlon with 4,575 points while Macy Ritter took second with 3,772 points at the Hendrix Spring Break Multis. Either Coffelt or Ritter was first in each event of the heptathlon except for the 800-meter run, which they took second and third in.
Christopher Davis took fourth (5,507) in the men's heptathlon followed by Duncan Ross in fifth (5,392). Davis took first in the 400-meter (51.78 seconds) and 110-meter hurdles (16.21 seconds) while Ross had the top height of 4.45 meters in the pole vault.
Kevin Farley won the shot put (17.96 m)and took second (54.18 m) in the discus at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. Jason Walker was seventh in the discus (48.55).
Farley was third in the hammer throw (59.27) on Friday with Stephen Zagurski finishing ninth (54.57).
Aaliah Herron was seventh (14.26) and Paden Wachter was ninth (13.14) in the shot put on the women's side. Wachter took eighth in the hammer throw (47.89) on Friday.
Lindsey Seabaugh finished ninth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12 minutes, 2.82 seconds while Jace Mortimer was fifth in 9:57.79 on the men's side.
Megan Parks was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:45.71) and fourth in the 800 (2:17.84) while Kaitlyn Shea took seventh (4:45.590 in the 1500.
In the men's 1500, Marc Maton's time of 3:50.80 was good for sixth.
Sydney O'Brien was eighth in the women's 3,000-meter run (10:17.12).
N'Kia Jones was fifth in the women's triple jump (11.91).
Dylan Rush took seventh in the men's pole vault (4.75).
Andrew Ryan finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 50.97.
Shane Brown finished fifth in 10:04.39 in the 3,000-meter steeple at the SIU Bill Cornell Spring Classic.
Southeast hosts the Drury Hotels Joey Haines Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Men's and women's hammer throw, along with the 10,000-meter runs, will be on Fridya at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex. The remainder of the events will take place Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
