The Southeast Missouri State softball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over Eastern Kentucky in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday in Richmond, Kentucky.
The Redhawks dropped a 4-2 decision in Game 1.
In Game 2, the Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when cleanup hitter Sarah Fobbs delivered a two-out, two-run double.
Southeast (13-28, 7-12 Ohio Valley Conference) answered in the top of the fourth with a pair of home runs. Brittany Stevens hit a solo shot, her second home run of the season, over the center-field wall before Darby Pruett put the Redhawks ahead, 4-2, with a three-run homer to center.
Haley Thogmartin and Mackenzie Hoelting combined to shut out EKU (32-11, 14-4) for six innings. Thogmartin picked up her team-leading eighth win of the season in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Hoelting held the Colonels to one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief, grabbing her second save of the year.
Claire Wernig, Savannah Carpenter, Abby Tillotson and Stevens each finished with two hits for the Redhawks.
Rachel Minogue's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference in the Colonels' victory in Game 1.
Minogue's hit came after Carpenter tied the game with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Hayley Flynn retired the Redhawks in order in the top of the seventh to secure her conference-high 22nd pitching win of the season. She gave up two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work.
Madeline Krumrey was tagged with the loss for Southeast. She threw her sixth complete game of the year, allowing four hits and four runs. She struck out six and walked one.
The Redhawks close out their nine-game road stretch with a doubleheader today at Morehead State.
Several Redhawks secured top finishes at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Atlanta.
On the men's side, Southeast's Kevin Farley took second in the hammer throw (60.99 meters) before finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 18.62 meters. Farley also placed third in the discus (53.08 meters).
Marc Maton took second for Southeast in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3 minutes, 48.78 seconds, while Chris Martin placed second for the Redhawks in the triple jump, tying his season best of 15.67 meters.
The men's 1,600 relay team of Brannon Wright, Brandon Chunn, Jordan Barber and Jarred Pasley wrapped up the meet with the fifth-best finish in school history, placing second in 3:08.89.
Taylor Coffelt placed second for the Redhawks' women's team in the javelin with a new personal record of 42.52 meters. Megan Parks had a PR time of 2:11.36 in the 800, which was good enough for third place.
The Redhawks return to action this weekend at the Memphis Invitational.
