Southeast Missouri State roundup: Redhawks soccer team solidifies hold on first place in OVC

The Southeast Missouri State soccer team moved another step closer to the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title Friday.

Southeast beat host Tennessee-Martin 2-1 in the Redhawks' final road game. Southeast improved to 10-3-1 overall and 6-1 in the OVC with two league games remaining.

The Redhawks have 18 points. Wins are worth three points and ties one point in conference play. They lead second-place Eastern Kentucky by five points.

Senior Lauren Bozesky gave Southeast the lead for good in the game's third minute when she blasted a shot from about 30 yards out for her sixth goal of the season and team-leading fourth goal in OVC play.

Southeast made it 2-0 when junior Courtney Luehmann scored her first goal of the year, with an assist from sophomore Jacey Boyko with about 10 minutes left in the opening half.

Luehmann, a Notre Dame Regional High School graduate from Charleston, Mo., who scored five goals last year, missed the early part of this season with a leg injury.

UTM (8-6-2, 3-3-1) scored with just 12 seconds left in the first half to make it 2-1. The Skyhawks could not get the equalizer despite outshooting Southeast 12-6 in the final period.

The Skyhawks finished with a 19-14 edge in shots, but only three of the attempts were on goal.

Southeast played its third consecutive game without freshman forward Erin Shulman, the squad's leading scorer with nine goals. She has been out with an ankle injury.

The Redhawks finish the regular season with four consecutive home games beginning today when Iowa State of the Big 12 Conference visits Houck Stadium at 1 p.m.

Southeast will try to avenge this year's 5-0 exhibition loss to the Cyclones.

Volleyball

The Southeast volleyball team continued its strong season by splitting a pair of home matches over the weekend.

Southeast (9-13, 7-4) beat Eastern Kentucky 13-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 on Friday before falling to OVC leader Morehead State 25-20, 28-30, 30-28, 25-16. The Eagles remained unbeaten in 11 league matches.

The Redhawks are third in the 11-team conference after finishing ninth last year.

Sophomore Colleen Yarber had a career-high 18 kills against EKU while hitting a career-high .417. She added 12 digs.

Junior Brittney Kalinoski had 13 kills and sophomore Emily Coon followed with 10 kills. Coon also put down five blocks.

Sophomore Berkley Idel led in digs with 19, followed by senior Paige Dossey with 13. Sophomore setter Julie Shives dished out 42 assists and added 10 digs.

Coon had a career-high 16 kills while hitting .400 against Morehead State. She added seven blocks.

Yarber recorded 14 kills and 12 digs. Idel posted a career-high 24 digs. Shives had 39 assists, nine kills and eight digs.

Southeast returns to action Friday at Tennessee Tech.
