Erin Shulman continued her impressive freshman season by helping the Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team nab its third consecutive win Friday.
Shulman's goal early in the second half lifted the Redhawks past Butler 1-0 at the Kentucky tournament in Lexington, Ky.
Southeast improved to 4-1 with its third straight shutout. Butler fell to 4-3.
Shulman notched her team-leading fifth goal of the year less than four minutes into the second half. Freshman Torey Byrd assisted on the play.
The Redhawks' defense did the rest. Southeast prevailed despite being outshot 22-5, including 16-3 in the final half. Butler had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon made just two saves to record the shutout.
"Ashton had a real solid game in goal for us. She did a great job coming off her line and smothering the ball," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said. "The team as a whole did a very good job of defending. While Butler got a lot of shots off, I can only think of one time that they got in behind our defense. We defended corners well, and they are a good team on corners."
