The Southeast Missouri State softball team were swept by Ohio Valley Conference leader Jacksonville State in a Saturday doubleheader to run the Redhawks' losing streak to seven games.
The Gamecocks, undefeated in conference action at 12-0, hit four homers in the doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex as they defeated Southeast 6-5 and 9-2 to improve to 22-14 on the season.
The Redhawks (11-21, 5-7 OVC) went up 3-0 after four innings in Game 1.
Danielle Turner drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Mackenzie Hoelting scored on an RBI groundout by Darby Pruett to make it 2-0.
An RBI double by Wheeler made it 3-0 after four, but the Gamecocks tied it with a three-run homer by Ella Denes, who hit 3 for 4 in the game, in the fifth. A sacrifice fly gave JSU the lead for good.
The Redhawks pulled within one run on a sacrifice fly by Savannah Carpenter and an RBI single by Turner, but a groundout ended it.
Maddie Krumrey (5-8) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks while striking out seven. Southeast had three errors in JSU's four-run fifth.
Whitney Gillespie improved to 7-1 in the circle for JSU. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits and six walks in seven innings.
Both teams recorded seven hits. Harli Wheeler was the only Redhawk with more than one, going 2 for 4.
The Gamecocks hit three three-run home runs in Game 2.
Gillespie blasted one in the first before a two-run double by Turner in the home half of the inning cut it to 3-2.
Denes hit homer No. 2 in the second to put the Gamecocks ahead 6-2 and Jame McGuire extended it to 9-2 with her three-run shot in the seventh.
The Redhawks were outhit 8-4 in the contest. Turner finished 3 for 3 at the plate while Holting was 1 for 2.
Taylor West picked up the complete-game win for JSU to move to 6-4. She walked four and struck out seven.
Haley Thogmartin took the loss and dropped to 6-8. She allowed six earned runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. She struck out a pair.
Hoelting pitched the final 5 2/3 in relief, allowing three earned runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Redhawks host Tennessee Tech in a 1 p.m. doubleheader today.
Southeast's track and field squads competed at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Relays on Friday and Saturday.
The Redhawks had five first-place finishes at the meet.
Angela Sumner won the women's 3,000-meter run on Friday with a time of 10 minutes, 10.12 seconds.
Kevin Farley won the shot put (18.05 meters) and Andrew Ryan won the javelin (50.98).
Cheyenne Tunti won the women's 400-meter dash in 56.01 while Cole Davis claimed the top spot in the men's 800 in 1:55.73. Jordan Brown was third in the race with a time of 1:55.91.
Chris Martin finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 15.67.
Farley also had a second-place finish in the discus (55.45) and third-place finish in the hammer throw (59.67). Aaliah Herron was fourth in the women's shot put with a toss of 13.79.
Kaitlyn Shea was second to Sumner in the 3,000 in 10:11.07.
Marc Maton was fourth in the men's 1500 in 3:58.47. Jordan Barber was fifth in the 400 (48.51).
The Redhawks are back in action at the SIUE Invitational in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Saturday.
The Southeast tennis team sustained a pair of home losses to Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State over the weekend.
The Colonels (12-8, 7-0 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated the Redhawks 6-1 on Friday and Morehead won 5-2 on Saturday to run Southeast's losing streak to 16 games.
Southeast lost the doubles point to EKU with Isabella Krupa and Annisa Warasant losing 6-4 at No. 1, Mila Majtan and Ana Canahuate-Torres losing 6-4 at No. 2 and the No. 3 spot had to be forfeited due to an injury to Anais Emelie.
Majtan's 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 2 singles spot was the only victory for the Redhawks. Krupa lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Warasanti lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Emilia Montneegro and Torress lost 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. The Redhawks had to forfeit at No. 6.
In doubles vs. MSU (3-15, 3-5 OVC) Southeast again had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and Majtan and Canahauate-Torres' match went unfinished at No. 2. Krupa and Warasanti los 6-3 at the top doubles spot.
Krup won in No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1 and Montenegro won 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot.
The No. 6 spot was forfeited, Majtan lost 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2, Warasanti lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Canahauate-Torres was defeated 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Redhawks drop to 1-17 and 0-8 in conference. They close out the season in Nashville with a match at Belmont Saturday and at Tennessee State on Sunday.
