~ Central Arkansas defeated its third OVC team, topping Southeast 88-72

The University of Central Arkansas men's basketball team had no answer for Tyler Stone and Leon Powell.

But the Bears came up with all the other answers to rout visiting Southeast Missouri State 88-72 on Monday night in Conway, Ark.

Southeast (4-5) remained winless in five road games after allowing a season-high point total.

UCA (4-3) notched its fourth consecutive victory after going 5-24 a year ago. Three of the Bears' victories this season have been over Ohio Valley Conference squads.

Southeast coach Dickey Nutt said the Redhawks' guards did not meet the challenge from the athletic Bears, who scored 24 points off the Redhawks' 18 turnovers.

UCA also had 26 second-chance points, and its bench outscored Southeast's reserves 50-7.

"Our guard play was absolutely horrendous, as bad as I've seen it in a long time," Nutt said. "A lack of confidence, a lack of toughness. We let their athleticism bother us all night long."

Stone, a sophomore forward, poured in a career-high 30 points. He hit 12 of 18 field goals while also grabbing eight rebounds and blocking two shots.

Powell, a senior forward, scored 26 points and grabbed 19 rebounds while adding two blocks and two steals. Powell made 11 of 16 from the field.

Southeast's other players combined to score just 16 points.

The Redhawks shot 50 percent from the field (30 of 60), most of that coming from Stone and Powell. Southeast made only 1 of 8 3-pointers.

UCA also shot 50 percent from the floor (29 of 58) and hit 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. The Bears were just 14 of 69 on 3-pointers in their first six games.

The Bears outrebounded Southeast 42-34 and committed just 10 turnovers. They had a 24-12 edge in points off turnovers.

UCA also had a decided advantage from the free-throw line, making 26 of 45 (57.8 percent) compared to 11 of 23 (47.8 percent) by Southeast.

Sophomore guard LaQuentin Miles, who played for Southeast as a freshman in 2009-10 before transferring to UCA, scored 16 points. He entered the night averaging 19.5 points per game.

UCA built a 12-point lead in the first half, but Southeast cut it to 41-34 at the intermission.

The Redhawks rallied to go ahead 45-43 early in the second half and led 47-46 with a little more than 15 minutes left.

A 3-pointer by Chris Henson with just less than 15 minutes remaining put UCA back up 49-47, and the Bears never relinquished the lead.

UCA built a 66-50 advantage midway through the half. Southeast used a 10-1 run to make it 67-60, but the Bears answered with 13 consecutive points to build their biggest lead of 80-60.

Southeast returns to action Saturday when it hosts Missouri-Kansas City in a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Stone honored

Stone was named the Ohio Valley Conference newcomer of the week Monday. It is the second time Stone has received the award.

Stone turned in his first career double-double with a game-high 18 points and an OVC single-game high 17 rebounds during Saturday's overtime win against Southeastern Louisiana. He hit the winning shot with 4 seconds left in overtime.

Stone also scored 10 points during Tuesday's loss at Arkansas State.
