When the Southeast Missouri State men's and women's basketball teams took to the Show Me Center floor for Redhawks Madness on Sunday night it offered fans a chance to see the teams in action.

It also gave men's coach Dickey Nutt and women's coach Ty Margenthaler a chance to see their respective teams in a game-like environment after just their first week of practice.

"For our team it was good to get out here and just play. We've only had six practices," Margenthaler said. "But the thing that I said to them afterward is that I think we're definitely a better scoring team. I mean, we didn't score 13 points total in last year's [Redhawks Madness]. I think that was exciting."

It was the second year for the free event, which drew 750 fans.

The duo of senior forward Jarekious Bradley and senior guard Yelena Rosado won the shooting competition before both team's instrasquad scrimmage.

The white team won the women's scrimmage, which was two halves of a 6-minute running clock, 24-17, and a few local players on the winning squad were impressive.

Dexter graduate and freshman guard Hannah Noe knocked down a couple of 3-pointers while junior transfer and Meadow Heights graduate Erin Bollmann hit several baseline jumpers. Notre Dame graduate and Southeast senior guard Allyson Bradshaw's helped lead the white team, making sure that the offense continued to run properly and attacking the basket a few times.

The men's scrimmage was two 12-minute halves, with the black team winning 70-66.

"Great night, great night," Nutt said. "I just really appreciate all of our fans for being here. It means a lot to our team."

"They tried to show out for them [the fans]. We didn't have a lot of defense going on tonight," Nutt added with a laugh. "But it was fun. It was a fun night. A lot of dunks, a lot of 3s and it was a good night. We're excited. This is a great time of year."

The game ended with a dunk from sophomore guard Antonius Cleveland, and there were several more leading up to that.

"Just playing in front of the lights, in front of the fans is a different setting," Nutt said. "Sometimes you don't do quite the same things you do in practice, and that's why this is very important to us. What a great turnout tonight. I'm very pleased."

Both teams have more than a month to continue preparing for their regular-season openers.

The women's team hosts Missouri Valley in its lone exhibition game Nov. 6. Margenthaler's squad then opens its season at home against Alabama A&M on Nov. 14.

"This team is a little different, which I'm excited for," Margenthaler said. "We have a lot of work to do, but they're playing well together and they like playing together, and that's a big, big thing."

The men's team hosts Missouri Baptist and Fontbonne for exhibition games on Nov. 3 and 8, respectively.

Nutt's squad opens the season with a pair of games in Los Angeles on Nov. 14 and 15 against Loyola Marymount and San Diego, respectively.

"I'm excited about this bunch," Nutt said. "They're a close-knit group. We've got a lot of new faces, but I believe we've got a lot of talent. Hopefully we can put it together."
