Southeast Missouri State baseball team drops 10-6 decision to Mississippi

The Southeast Missouri State baseball team's final nonconference game of the season was interesting to say the least.

Southeast hit into a rare triple play in the top of the first inning.

One inning later the Redhawks struck out four times in the same frame after one of the players reached on a third-strike wild pitch.

The Redhawks also had their strong moments Tuesday night but suffered a 10-6 loss to Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.

Southeast fell to 29-20 while the Rebels of the rugged Southeastern Conference improved to 29-23.

Southeast finished with 12 hits, just two less than the Rebels.

Seniors Michael Adamson and Tim Rupp and juniors Trenton Moses and Jesse Tierney all had two hits.

"We continue to swing the bats well," Southeast coach Mark Hogan said. "We had 12 hits against a top-flight pitching staff."

Junior Kenton Parmley led off the game with a single and Tierney walked.

Adamson hit a sharp one-hop grounder to third baseman Alex Yarbrough, who stepped on third to begin the 5-4-3 triple play.

The Redhawks got on the board first with a three-run third inning.

Tierney singled with one out and advanced to third on Adamson's double.

Moses got an RBI by reaching on an error, Jones followed with an RBI double and junior Kody Campbell missed his first home run of the season by a few feet but picked up an RBI with the sacrifice fly.

The Rebels answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, all unearned because of a two-out error.

A two-run homer by Miles Hamblin put Ole Miss up 4-3. It never relinquished the lead.

Ole Miss added two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to make it 7-3.

The Rebels put Southeast in a deep hole with a three-run eighth inning highlighted by Matt Snyder's two-run homer.

Southeast made things interesting in the ninth by scoring three runs before the rally died.

Senior Josh Syberg took the loss on the mound. He went 2 2/3 innings, giving up four unearned runs on six hits and three walks.

Southeast used five more pitchers. Senior Kirk Boeller had the most success, working 1 2/3 perfect innings.

Junior Ryan Prickett pitched a scoreless inning and freshman Christian Hull retired the only two batters he faced.

Southeast ends the regular season Friday and Saturday with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference home series against Eastern Illinois.

Dicus honored

Southeast senior Jon Dicus was named the OVC co-pitcher of the week Monday.

Dicus threw his first career complete game during a 3-2 win at Austin Peay on Sunday. He went seven innings, allowed nine hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter.
