Southeast Missouri State did not win any team titles but turned in plenty of strong performances at the Joey Haines Invitational.
Southeast's 29th annual outdoor track and field meet at the Abe Stuber Complex featured 11 women's teams and nine men's squads.
The hammer throw was held Friday, with all other events contested Saturday. More than 500 collegiate athletes participated.
"Overall it was a great meet and the weather cooperated," Southeast coach Eric Crumpecker said.
Memphis won the men's championship with 146 points, followed closely by SIU-Carbondale with 138 points. Southeast finished third with 107.
SIU-Carbondale handily claimed the women's title with 171.5 points. Lincoln, a Division II power from Jefferson City, Mo., was a distant second with 86 points. Southeast placed fourth with 83.33.
"We did well considering we held several people out of the meet because they had some nagging injuries," Crumpecker said. "Nobody comes into these meets worrying about the team scores. It's all just trying to get better for later on down the road."
Southeast nabbed four first-place finishes, three on the men's side.
Senior Brandon Colbert won the shot put with a throw of 56 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Junior Tyler Terry, a Central High School graduate, won the long jump with a leap of 23-8 3/4.
The Redhawks' 400-meter relay team of junior Ryan Criglar, Terry, junior Robert Delaria and junior Jamere Frankin was first with a time of 41.60 seconds.
On the women's side, Southeast senior Samantha Espiricueta won the javelin with a distance of 136-11.
"They all did really well," Crumpecker said. "Tyler won his second long jump competition in a row. Brandon is coming on in the shot put. Our men's [400] relay ran really great. That's a nice time this early in the season."
Colbert also was third in the hammer throw and sixth in the discus.
Junior Rachel Kahle, a Jackson High School graduate, had a strong meet. She was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 while running on the 400 and 1,600 relays that both finished sixth.
"Rachel is running really well right now. And she was running into a pretty strong wind," Crumpecker said.
Southeast's men had three runner-up finishes, by Franklin in the 100, Chris Gill in the 400 and Jason Lumpkin in the 5,000.
Max Wieser, a sophomore who attended Saxony Lutheran High School, was third in the 800 and ran on Southeast's 1,600 relay that placed seventh.
Several other area high school graduates recorded top-eight finishes for Southeast on the women's side.
Sophomore Tiffany Mead (Central) was third in the 800, junior Mary Pearson (Central) was fifth in the long jump, freshman Jill Schnurbusch (Notre Dame) was sixth in the high jump and junior Brianna Egbuka (Central) was seventh in the shot put.
Scott City High School graduate Loren Groves, a four-time All-American at Kansas State, finished fourth in the hammer throw as an unattached athlete. Her distance was 184-8.
Groves, who completed her collegiate eligibility last year, is continuing to train with an eye on trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
