Southeast Missouri State could not defend its men's and women's Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday as host Eastern Illinois swept the titles.

The Redhawks men finished a distant second with 176, 70 points shy of the Panthers. Southeast's women were third, finishing right behind Tennessee State and 92 points behind Eastern Illinois.

Senior distance runner Lindsay Zeiler won her 16th OVC title by capturing the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 33.21 seconds. Juli Koenegstein was fifth in the 1,500. Whitney Thomas came in second in the 100 hurdles in 14.52, and Ore Ibe was third in 14.58. Natasha Fortenberry was third in the 400, and Southeast was third in the 1,600 relay.

Brandon Colbert won the discus with a throw of 171 feet, 3 inches. Bill Nekula was third in the discus. Southeast also won the 1,600 relay. David Reid, Myron Pettigrew, Chris Poindexter and Chris Williams ran the 1,600 in 3:11.91.

Softball splits

The Redhawks softball team saw its chances of a Ohio Valley Conference tournament berth collapse Saturday with a doubleheader split at Morehead State.

Southeast (10-16, 19-29) dropped the opener 8-1 and came back to win the second game 7-4. The Redhawks were two games behind both Tennessee-Martin and Austin Peay in the win column heading into the season-ending doubleheader at Morehead.

Michelle Summers reclaimed sole possession of the Southeast single-season home run record with her 13th of the season in the 7-4 win. Summers had two hits and three RBIs in the win. Lauren Bradley had three hits and two RBIs.

Jennifer Vasquez had three hits for Southeast in the loss. Southeast will conclude its season today at Morehead.
