Southeast coach joins Missouri hall of fame

Southeast Missouri State University track and cross country coach Joey Haines is adding to his list of accomplishments.

Haines, who has directed Southeast's men's and women's track and cross country programs since 1982, will be inducted into the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame today in Columbia, Mo.

Haines will join former Southeast track coach and athletic director Marvin Rosengarten as Southeast's only selections in the Hall of Fame. Rosengarten was inducted in 1984.

"It's a great honor, and I'm really excited about it," Haines said. "It's a compliment to all the tremendous athletes I've been fortunate enough to coach at Southeast and also all the fine assistant coaches I've had."

Haines' list of accomplishments at Southeast includes coaching 18 NCAA Division II final four teams, one NCAA Division II national indoor track championship, one NCAA Division II national cross country championship, four NCAA Division II runner-up teams, six NCAA Division II third-place teams, six NCAA Division II fourth-place teams, 145 NCAA Division II All-Americans, 23 NCAA II individual national champions, three NCAA Division I All-Americans and one NCAA Division I individual national champion.

Haines won six Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year awards and 11 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards. He has been the state Coach of the Year seven times.

In addition, Haines served as sprint coach at the United States Olympic Festival in 1994 and was president of the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Coaches Association during the 1990-91 school year.
