Southeast athletics schedules remain in doubt

Two Southeast Missouri State University athletic events were canceled Tuesday as a result of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

Southeast's women's volleyball game at Southern Illinois University and the women's soccer match at Drury College were postponed.

The athletic events in the Ohio Valley Conference were also postponed indefinitely.

Southeast's golf team participated in the Drury Intercollegiate Invitational at Bent Creek Tuesday, but the event started before the attacks took place.

Though the decisions to cancel Southeast's matches Tuesday were made by the host school, Southeast athletic director Donald Caveman concurred with the decisions made by SIU and Drury.

"I don't think people think it's appropriate to be engaging in college athletics given what's going on right now," Kaverman said. "It's best that we concentrate on the tragedy."

Kaverman didn't know the status of the week's upcoming events. Southeast has no games or matches scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday.

He said he thought Southeast's home football game Saturday against Southwest Missouri State would be played, but he couldn't say for sure.

"There's so much unknown," Kaverman said, referring to the attacks. "We're taking a wait-and-see approach. In the next 48 hours, it will be clear whether we play."

"I completely support the decision," soccer coach Heather Nelson said. "We thought it was important to get kids back home at a time like this. It was a really strange day, definitely one we'll all remember rest of our lives."

Makeup dates for the soccer and volleyball matches have not been set.

"I think given the state of affairs, that SIU made a wise decision," volleyball coach Cindy Gannon said. "Our kids are a little distracted. When I first saw it this morning, I thought it seems awful trivial to get ready for a volleyball match."
