STEELE -- In a rematch of last year's Class 2A playoff baseball game that was won by Notre Dame in thrilling fashion in the final inning, this time South Pemiscot gained a measure of revenge with a 3-2, eight-inning victory Saturday.
South Pemiscot remained undefeated at 8-0 while Notre Dame fell to 8-3.
"It was a very good game and South Pemiscot has a really solid team," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett.
Mark Ostendorf was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he allowed six hits and two earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. Ostendorf struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
"Mark threw tremendously well," Graviett said.
Also impressive was South Pemiscot starter Justin DePriest, who allowed six hits in seven innings while fanning seven and walking four.
Matt Bollinger had two of Notre Dame's seven hits.
Notre Dame grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Wes Steele.
South Pemiscot tied it in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by DePriest to force extra innings. The hosts then won it in the bottom of the eighth.
Marble Hill Optimist Tournament
MARBLE HILL -- Woodland won both games it played to win its own round-robin Marble Hill Optimist Tournament.
After Leopold defeated Meadow Heights 12-2, Woodland beat Meadow Heights 18-1 and Leopold 9-0 as the Cardinals raised their record to 7-2.
In the first game, Ashton James earned the win for Leopold, going five innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits and five strike outs.
Lee Vendermierden went 3-for-3 and Josh Van de Ven went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in. Garren Engelen hit a three-run homer for the Wildcats.
Joe Jones had two hits including a double for Meadow Heights.
In the Woodland-Meadow-Heights game, the Cardinals got three homers, all in a nine-run second inning, from Paul Long, Jared Houchins and Joey Grippo. Long ended the game going 3-for-4 with five RBIs, Houchins went 4-for-4 with four RBIS and Grippo went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Kyle Long had two hits and was on base six times.
In the last game, Kyle Long pitched a four-hit shutout while striking out eight.
Woodland continued its home-run derby, hitting two more, one from C.W. Stacy and the other from Houchins, who also tripled.
Freshman Josh Van de Ven went 5 1/3 and gave up all nine runs. Lee Vandermierden had two hits for Leopold.
