Southeast Missouri State men's basketball coach Scott Edgar would neither deny nor confirm that forward Jajuan Maxwell will be the latest player to transfer out of the program.
But as first reported Wednesday night on semissourian.com, Maxwell most likely will be the second player to leave the Redhawks prematurely.
Maxwell has informed Edgar of his intention to transfer, according to a Southeast source. Maxwell did not return several telephone messages.
Reached Thursday, Edgar would not say whether Maxwell has made the decision to leave Southeast.
"I'm being true to my word," Edgar said. "I don't feel it's appropriate to comment on a lot of things in my program right now."
Maxwell, a forward, missed the entire 2007-08 season as a redshirt after he suffered a serious knee injury last spring.
As a freshman in 2006-07, Maxwell averaged 5.1 points per game while averaging 14.2 minutes per game. He primarily came off the bench, but made three starts.
Maxwell would join two-year starting point guard Roderick Pearson as players who recently have decided to leave the program.
Also in recent weeks, assistant coach and primary recruiter Ronnie Dean was informed by Edgar that his contract would not be renewed when it expires April 30.
Baseball
Southeast announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Greg Hendrix.
Hendrix, who plays at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 45th round of the 2006 amateur draft.
Hendrix helped Shelton State to the JUCO World Series last year, finishing with a 4-1 record and 38 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. He is averaging 13.24 strikeouts per game in 2008.
"Greg is a great fit, not only for our program, but Cape Girardeau as well," Southeast coach Mark Hogan said in a statement. "He is a tremendous young man and our fans will love to watch him pitch."
Football
The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced that Southeast senior linebacker Adam Casper was named to its Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions who maintained a 3.2 grade-point average or better.
Casper was one of 439 players who qualified for membership. He has a 3.419 GPA and was a first-team all-Ohio Valley Conference pick and an honorable mention All-American.
