Soriano powers Yanks with grand slam

NEW YORK -- Enrique Wilson, a late addition to the starting lineup for injured Alfonso Soriano, hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the sixth inning to lead the New York Yankees over the Boston Red Sox 10-2 Saturday.

The Yankees backed Mike Mussina (8-2) with four more home runs to win for the 19th time in 24 games.

Derek Jeter hit a first-pitch leadoff homer and Jason Giambi and Rondell White connected later as New York snapped Boston's four-game winning streak and sent the Red Sox to just their fifth loss in 26 road games.

Indians 8, White Sox 4

CLEVELAND -- Jim Thome's three-run homer capped a fifth inning when Cleveland scored eight unearned runs and the Indians sent the Chicago White Sox to their lost sixth straight.

Thome's 15th homer concluded Cleveland's biggest inning since April 7, 2000, and came after Chicago's infield made two errors behind starter Todd Ritchie (3-7).

Orioles 4, Mariners 3

BALTIMORE -- Jay Gibbons singled in two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Baltimore rallied to beat Kazuhiro Sasaki and Seattle.

Although a throwing error by Sasaki (2-1) contributed heavily to the two-run comeback, one of the runs was earned -- the first earned run against the Mariners' closer in 21 appearances this season.

Twins 4, Angels 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kyle Lohse threw seven innings to match his longest outing of the season and Cristian Guzman homered as Minnesota rallied to beat Anaheim.

Lohse (5-3) was the first Twins starter in three games to last beyond the fourth inning, allowing one run and eight hits.

Guzman's third home run of the season came off Kevin Appier (5-3) in a three-run seventh inning that put the Twins ahead for good.

Rangers 3, Royals 1

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kenny Rogers pitched a five-hitter for Texas.

Herbert Perry had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs.

Athletics 8, Devil Rays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Barry Zito struck out 11 and won his fifth straight decision to lead Oakland.

Zito (6-2) tied his career high for strikeouts, allowing one run and seven hits in eight innings.

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Jose Cruz Jr. singled and scored the go-ahead run and Darrin Fletcher hit a two-run homer as Toronto defeated Detroit in 11 innings.

Cliff Politte (1-0) didn't give up a hit while striking out two over 2 1-3 innings.
