Sorenstam's Masters win is her sixth this season

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France -- Annika Sorenstam shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday to win her second Evian Masters championship and sixth title of the season.

Sorenstam finished with a four-round total of 19-under 269, four strokes ahead of Sweden's Maria Hjorth and South Korea's Mi Hyun Kim, who shared second place at 273.

Sorenstam had four birdies and one bogey in the final round and won $315,000 for her fifth LPGA Tour victory of the season.

Sorenstam, the 2000 Evian Masters winner, has earned $1,354,054 in 11 starts this year. She also won her season-opening event in Australia.

"I couldn't feel better," Sorenstam said. "This is the second-biggest purse on the tour. A beautiful setting, a top-class field and a first-class event. It was my goal to come over and win the Evian and I've done it."

Sorenstam, who won eight times last year, has pledged to do better in 2002.

"A lot of people said I couldn't do it," Sorenstam said. "But I'm absolutely determined to do that. I feel I'm hitting better and making more putts. And score-wise I'm better too."

Hjorth had eight birdies and matched the course record with an 8-under 64. She missed a 3-foot birdie putt and a chance at the course record at No. 18.

"I thought it would break more," Hjorth explained. "Maybe I hit it too firm. It was a good putt but just didn't drop."

American Laura Diaz shot a 65 and South Korea's Se Ri Pak, who was coming off a victory at the LPGA Championship, had a 69 to share fourth place at 14-under 274.

SENIOR PGA: Jay Sigel shot a 2-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead over Fuzzy Zoeller and Gil Morgan after the second round of the BellSouth Senior Classic at Nashville, Tenn.

The 58-year-old Sigel, who opened with a 64, had a 10-under 134 total. The two-time U.S. Amateur champion won the Farmers Charity Classic last month in Michigan for his seventh senior title.

Zoeller, coming off a victory last week in the Senior PGA Championship in Akron, Ohio, matched Morgan with a 68.

SENIOR WOMEN: LPGA Tour regular Sherri Turner shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead in the Hy-Vee Classic near Johnston, Iowa. Judy Dickinson and Patty Sheehan were a stroke back, and Jan Stephenson and Lori West opened with 70s.
