Sorenstam matches record, overpowers LPGA field

AURORA, Ill. -- No record seems safe from Annika Sorenstam.

A little more than a year after shooting the first 59 in LPGA history, Sorenstam matched the best 54-score ever on the tour in winning the inaugural Kellogg-Keebler Classic on Sunday.

Sorenstam fashioned a 21-under-par 195 with a sizzling finish to win by 11 strokes, the largest margin on the tour this year.

It was the fourth tour win of the season and 35th overall for Sorenstam, who closed with a 7-under 65, and it set her up for a strong run at the tour's second major, the LPGA Championship starting Thursday at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

KEMPER INSURANCE OPEN: On a breezy day that produced spectacular shots and costly miscues, Bob Estes won with a steady round of 17 pars and one birdie at Potomac, Md.

Estes' 1-under 70 gave him an 11-under 273 total and a one-stroke victory over 1999 Kemper winner Rich Beem (69). Estes won for the fourth time on the PGA Tour, breaking the tournament's three-year streak of first-time winners.

Bob Burns broke a four-way tie with a hole-in-one at the 11th, but fell out of contention with a double bogey at No. 16 after his approach landed 12 yards from the pin and rolled downhill off the green and onto a drainage grate. Burns (72) and Steve Elkington (69) tied for third at 9 under.

NFL GOLF CLASSIC: James Mason, the 51-year-old teaching pro from Dillard, Ga., who had to qualify for the tournament, shot a 3-under 69 to win by two strokes at Clifton, N.J.

Mason made an eagle with an iron from the second fairway and a birdie from the bunker on No. 6 in becoming the first qualifier to win on the senior tour since Jim Ahern in the 1999 AT&T Canada Senior Open. Mason is the eighth qualifier to win a senior title.

BRITISH MASTERS: England's Justin Rose won the British Masters, closing with a 7-under 65 for a one-shot victory over countryman Ian Poulter at Woburn, England.

The 21-year-old Rose had a 19-under 269 total for his fourth victory of the season and second European tour win of the year.

NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA CLASSIC: Gary Hallberg, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour winner, shot a 7-under 64 for a three-stroke victory in the Buy.com Tour at Moosic, Pa.

Hallberg, 44, had a 9-under 275 total on the Glenmaura National course. He played the first 13 holes Sunday in 8 under, with an eagle on the par-5 sixth and six birdies.
