Two opening-round games were played in the Notre Dame Regional High School's Softballfest as the school's annual Sportsfest began.
Notre Dame of St. Louis breezed by St. Vincent in five innings, 12-0. St. Vincent could only manage one hit off of starter Sara Dooley. Dooley struck out eight batters in four innings.
The second game was closer as St. Pius defeated Poplar Bluff 5-2. Deena Moss came through for St. Pius with a two run double in the second inning. Christine Collins also had a pair of hits for St. Pius. Stacy Giljum recorded the win.
More than 30 teams will be in Cape Girardeau for the SportsFest, which gets into full swing today with volleyball, softball and soccer games.
Teams from St. Louis and Southern Illinois will join Notre Dame and a host of Southeast Missouri teams in events spread across the campus. Twenty-four are varsity-level teams and eight are junior-varsity teams.
Four soccer games will be played today along with two softball games, 12 volleyball games for varsity and JV teams.
Championships for each tournament will be Saturday.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and allows admission to all three events, which are held simultaneously.
Cape Central 4, Jackson 2
JACKSON, Mo. -- Central (3-4) finally came alive offensively with a win over Jackson. Alex Wieser, Laura Beard and Erica Schabbing each went 2-for-4. Schabbing drove in two runs and Beard had one RBI.
Megan McDonald continued her pitching domination as she allowed just two hits and struck out nine in a complete game.
VOLLEYBALL
Scotty City 15-15 New Madrid 3-5
SCOTT CITY, Mo.-- Scott City handed New Madrid a loss at home, winning in straight sets.
Amanda O'Brien led the Rams offense with four aces and six assists. Also contributing was Sidney Baer with two aces and six kills. Megan Ressell added an ace and six assists.
Scott City's Junior Varsity also won 15-5,16-14.
Perryville 15-15 Cape Central 3-6
PERRYVILLE, Mo. --Perryville won its first game of the season in straight sets.
Stephanie Landholt collected 12 service points for the Pirates. Jaime Hacker had five digs and three blocks and Alissa Moeckel had six kills to help hand Central its second straight loss.
Perryville's junior varsity also won 15-8, 11-15, 15-8.
Ste. Genevieve 15-16 St. Vincent 6-14
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent (0-2) lost another starter for the second night in a row, this time due to illness. Despite being short-handed the Indians battled back from a 14-4 score to tie the second game before the Dragons pulled away for the sweep. Dani Emmendorfer had 18 assists for St. Vincent while Mary-Beth Reiss and Allison Prost each had four kills.
St. Vincent's junior varsity (2-0) won 13-15, 15-4, 15-10.
CROSS COUNTRY
Murphysboro Invitational
MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Notre Dame opened its season with a strong performance at the Murphysboro Invitational. The boys team finished third while the girls finished fourth.
Austin Crichlow set the school record at Notre Dame with a time of 17 minutes, 38 seconds over the 3.1 mile course. The previous record of 17:40 by Rick Smith had stood since 1999. Other top Bulldog runners were Ryan Roggow (10th, 18:08), Sam Montgomery (18th, 18:58), and Josh Lester (20th, 19:16).
The girls squad was led by Junior Kasie Essner who finished 12th overall with a time of 24:23. Sarah Unterreiner finished 13th (24:31) and Megan Rosenquist placed 18th (25:18).
Casie Janet led the JV girls and Matt Pfau paced the JV boys.
TENNIS
Central 9, Jackson 7
JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Central defeated Jackson for the first time in two years winning 6-3.
Erica Foley defeated Lauren Everett to secure Central's victory.
Other singles winners for Central were Lauren Sulser, Allie McGinty and Liz LaFoe.
Kelly Mitchell and Kim Anderson won in singles for the Indians.
In doubles, Central's Sulser and Allison Campbell defeated Katie Domian and Kari Miinch; Central's Brett Ford and Lafoe defeated Kim Anderson and Carrie Golden; and Jackson's Kelly Mitchell and Everett defeated McGinty and Erica Foley .
The Central Junior Varsity swept Jackson 22-0.
