SIU loses, Kill hospitalized

The Southern Illinois coach suffered a seizure in the closing seconds of the Salukis' 61-35 loss to Illinois State.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois' dominance in the Gateway Conference ended Saturday night as visiting Illinois State routed the nation's top-ranked Division I-AA team 61-35.

The Salukis (4-2, 2-1) entered the contest with a nine-game conference winning streak, but they quickly fell behind, 21-0, in the first quarter and 38-14 at halftime.

The Redbirds (4-3, 1-2) piled up 594 yards in the game and their lead was never threatened.

With 30 seconds remaining in the contest, SIU head coach Jerry Kill had a seizure on the sidelines. University officials said the seizures are a medical condition that have surfaced several times during Kill's coaching career and do not seriously affect his health.

Kill was taken to a hospital for observation, but he is expected to be back on the sidelines next weekend at Indiana State, SIU officials said.
