SIKESTON — When it comes to chasing his hoop dreams, Dontrez Williams doesn't just talk the talk – he lets his game do the talking.
A constant presence on the court at Sikeston Field House, Williams has finally reached that pivotal milestone in any athlete's journey: signing his letter of intent to play college basketball at Abilene Christian University during a ceremony on Wednesday, November 15.
“It felt good [putting pen to paper],” Williams said. “This is an experience I have wanted my whole life and I’m just looking forward to going to college. It was everything I was looking for and it just felt like a family environment. It was the right fit. I’m excited to play at the next level and keep working towards my goal of playing professionally one day."
Williams had a breakthrough junior season, leading the Bulldogs to a 22-8 overall record and the MSHSAA Class 5, District 1 Championship. Williams played a crucial role in the team’s success, averaging an impressive 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 54 percent from the field. He was a key player in Sikeston’s upset victory over top-ranked Cape Central in the district tournament, leading the team to their first title since 2021.
With his college destination secured during the early signing period (November 8 through November 15), Williams can now fully immerse himself in his final high school season, unburdened by the pressure of ongoing recruitment.
This early decision allows him to focus solely on leading his Sikeston Bulldogs to a championship-caliber campaign.
“It takes some of the pressure off his shoulder,” said Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield. “Knowing he's headed to a prestigious institution with an exceptional basketball program allows him to fully immerse himself in this final season.”
Williams also had offers from Tulane, Nicholls State, UT-Arlington and Lindenwood.
The ultra-athletic 6-foot-5-inch forward possesses an arsenal of skills that make him a force on the court. His shooting range extends beyond the arc, and his deft handling and passing abilities elevate his game to another level.
A true gym rat, Williams is constantly honing his craft, pushing the limits of his potential. With a ceiling that seems to reach the sky, he is poised to make a significant impact on the college basketball landscape.
“His upside is off the charts,” Holifield said. “His potential is truly exceptional. He possesses the talent and drive to achieve remarkable things. His upbringing in a supportive family and his work ethic will undoubtedly serve him well at the collegiate level and beyond. His offensive skills are already impressive, and his defensive prowess will only continue to improve. Witnessing the development of such a talented and dedicated player has been a privilege. The marked improvement in every aspect of his game is a testament to his commitment. I'm incredibly proud of his growth and excited for the bright future that lies ahead."
Abilene Christian, led by third-year head coach Brette Tanner, competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Western Athletic Conference. The Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2019 and 2021. In their 2021 appearance, they pulled off a thrilling upset of No. 3 seed Texas in the opening round, demonstrating their ability to compete with the nation's elite.
