CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Fourth-seeded Sikeston pulled off an overtime upset of No. 1 Kelly 45-37 Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Chaffee girls basketball tournament.

Sikeston outscored Kelly 9-1 in the overtime period.

The Lady Bulldogs had a huge advantage at the free throw line, making 25 of their 34 attempts. Kelly meanwhile, made only eight of 22.

Dana Essner led Kelly with 10 points.

Jen Medlin paced Sikeston with 17.

In a first-round game, No. 3 Scott City knocked off No. 6 Oran 46-33.

Loren Groves scored a game-high 19 points for Scott City (2-0).

Ashley Dirnberger and Maria Eftink both scored 14 for the Lady Eagles. Dirnberger scored all her points in the first half.

In a consolation semifinal, Jennifer Vandeven personally outscored the Lady Eagles as Chaffee easily disposed of East Prairie 78-25. Vandeven scored 29 points, followed by teammate April Stafford with 10.

"I was real pleased with the team effort," Chaffee coach Tammy Brock said. "We've been working on trying to pass the ball around and give everyone some shot opportunities and I think we did that tonight."

SWIMMING

KIRKWOOD 125, CAPE CENTRAL 60

KIRKWOOD, Mo. -- Cape Central fell to 0-3 in dual matches, but posted its highest score of the year.

"We've been trying to improve on our points each meet," said Central coach Dayna Powell. "It's been in the 30s and 40s so we're making progress.

Cecil Quinn took a first place in diving and Andrew Moreton won the 100 freestyle.

Notre Dame competed well, but fell short in a home meet, the Bulldogs' first dual meet of the season.

Jordan Kuper was a double winner for the Bulldogs as he claimed the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

BOYS BASKETBALL

BELL CITY 69, ADVANCE 68

BELL CITY, Mo. -- The Cubs mounted a fourth-quarter rally to nip the Hornets in a see-saw contest Tuesday night.

Bell City (2-2) jumped out to a 23-11 first-quarter lead, and took a 37-31 edge into the half-time intermission.

But Advance bounced back to take a 52-49 lead into the final quarter of a game marred by 55 fouls.

"Our bench really carried us until we could get our regulars back in there," said Bell City coach David Heeb of the foul-plagued contest.

C.J. Hadley led the Cubs with 22 points and Eric Henry chipped in with 16.

Jared Ritter paced the Hornets with 20 points. Chris Walker followed with 15 and Cain Kelley had 12.

SCOTT COUNTY CENTRAL 85

ZALMA 57

ZALMA, Mo. -- Terrance Williams and Chris Johnson matched Zalma's total score to pace the Braves victory in a game played Tuesday night.

Williams finished with 32 -- 25 in the second half -- and Johnson added 25.

Zalma (0-4) was led by Nick Reinhardt (13), Brad McKlin (11) and Steven McCain (10).

Freshmen basketball

CAPE CENTRAL 73, JACKSON 57

The Tigers (5-1) rode a 27-point performance by Lorenzo Braxton to rout the Indians.

Eighth grade basketball

CAPE CENTRAL 28, JACKSON 26

The Tigers defensive effort -- coaches singled out Garrett Ozbun for stellar work on the defensive end and the boards -- was the key to the close win over the Indians.

Kingsley Ehie led Cape Central (4-1) with eight points.
