FARMINGTON, Mo. — Sikeston’s girls’ soccer team had a rollercoaster weekend, showcasing both impressive highs and challenging setbacks at the Fralish Cup in Carbondale, Illinois.

The Lady Bulldogs (6-6) kicked things off with a record-breaking 9-0 victory over Illinois Valley Central (0-10-1) on Friday, April 12.

“We were very unselfish and passed well,” said Sikeston coach Gabe Dement. “Our defense kept things locked on their end mostly and earned the shutout.”

Kennedi Sims made program history during the match, shattering the single-game goal and points records with a stunning five goals and two assists, totaling 12 points.

Cate Schrumpf further fueled the offensive fire with three goals and three assists, while Ruby Sullivan celebrated her first career varsity goal.

Landri Hammontree added a goal while Natalie Wright contributed an assist.

However, the team’s momentum faced a setback with a 7-0 loss to Carbondale (7-3-1) on Saturday.

Despite trailing only 1-0 at halftime, the second half proved difficult for the Lady Bulldogs.

“We looked solid in the first half,” Dement said. “We were really focused and playing well. In the second half, things got away from us but we can build on the first half.”

Sikeston bounced back with a crucial 2-1 win at Farmington (11-6) on Monday, April 15.

The victory was a crucial victory for the Lady Bulldogs, bolstering their position in both the SEMO Conference standings and district seeding.

Hammontree scored both of Sikeston’s goals, each off an assist from Sims, and goalkeeper Hailey Presley’s eight saves were instrumental in securing the win.

“We had 15 shots and created some great chances,” Dement said. “Hammontree finished off a couple of great passes from Sims. Olivia Gadberry did a wonderful job keeping them from getting too many chances. Her speed, aggression and ability to step up in key moments were huge.”

Sikeston will travel to North County (3-5) in another Class 3, District 1 clash on Wednesday, April 17.
