HILLSBORO, Mo. — The Sikeston girls’ track and field team had five athletes qualify for the MSHSAA Class 4 State Meet after strong performances at the sectional meet on Saturday, May 20 at Hillsboro High School.

“Overall, I think we did really well,” said Sikeston coach Betsy Colwick. “Of course, we wish that both of our hurdlers would’ve made it through but it always depends on how you compete the day of. We are looking forward to having a good standing in the high jump and long jump and we’re excited to see what our [400] relay can do.

Brionna Williams was the team’s highest finisher. She placed second in the high jump after clearing five feet, 1.75 inches

Lanaiyah Shabazz, Kirsten Fairhurst, Don Quaria Metty and Reese Steward were third in the 400-meter relay with a time of 49.90 seconds.

Fairhurst was also third and Steward was fourth in the long jump with leaps of 17-9 and 17-2.75, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs placed ninth as a team with 29 points.

Sikeston’s qualifiers will compete in the state meet at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City, Missouri on Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27.

__CLASS 3 SECTIONAL__

New Madrid County Central, Kelly and East Prairie all had athletes compete at the MSHSAA Class Sectional Meet at Hillsboro High School on Saturday, May 20.

NMCC’s Ja’Kwon Jones won the long jump after clearing 21 feet, 8.75 inches.

NMCC’s Evan McClellan qualified in the 110 hurdles after finishing third with a time of 16.18

Kelly’s Blaire Kelly qualified in the javelin after placing fourth with a throw of 104-10, and Myah Heerion qualified in the shot put after placing fourth with a toss of 33-2.
