SIKESTON, Mo. — The Sikeston girls’ tennis team aced its way to its first win of the season with a resounding victory over Charleston at SHS on Tuesday, September 12.
“We played hard as a team,” said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. “I was proud of the girls because they played hard and never gave up.”
The Lady Bulldogs (1-6-1) won 8-1 over the Lady Bluejays (2-7-0), rejuvenating the team’s spirits and fostering a positive outlook for the rest of the team’s journey.
In singles play, Sikeston’s Chloe Lin secured an 8-3 victory over Lilly Johnson at the No. 1 spot.
Sikeston’s Saloni Mairsuria overcame Amelia Logan with a score of 8-5 in the No. 2 singles match. At the No. 3 position, Sikeston’s Juliet Collins outplayed Chandra Williams with a score of 8-3.
Sikeston’s Alana Jones defeated De’Ziyah Hamilton 8-3 at the No. 4 spot, while Sikeston’s Anna Purves squeaked by De’Ava Hamilton 9-7 in the No. 5 match and Cheyenne Parker won 8-1 over La’Zarreonna Fitzpatrick at the No. 6 position.
Charleston’s combo of Logan and Williams narrowly defeated Lin and Maisuria in the No. 1 doubles match, securing the Lady Bluejays lone win of the afternoon. ‘
The Sikeston duo Collins and Jones won 8-6 over Johnson and Fitzpatrick in the No. 2 doubles match, and Purves and Parker won at the No. 3 doubles spot with an 8-2 victory over the De’Ziyah and De’Ava Hamilton.
Sikeston will face its toughest challenge of the season when it hosts Kennett with Holcomb (10-0-0) on Thursday, September 14.
Charleston will face Poplar Bluff at home on Tuesday, September 19.
